If you carry the Citi AAdvantage Executive card, your annual fee is going up $100. Before you cancel out of principle, look at what happened to the thing the card actually buys.
Starting August 23, the refreshed Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard carries a $695 annual fee for new cardmembers, up from $595. On exactly the same day, American Airlines raises the price of a standard Admirals Club membership from $850 to $1,400, and introduces a new single membership, no guests, at $750.
Card fee: up $100. The standalone product it replaces: up $550.
That card is still the only credit card that comes with a full Admirals Club membership. So the fee increase everyone will write about is the smaller half of the announcement. The lounge got much more expensive, and the cheapest legitimate door into it just became a credit card.
Here’s the math if you’re one of the people this is aimed at. If you would otherwise buy a standard Admirals Club membership at the new $1,400, the card gets you in for $695 and throws in a free checked bag for you and up to eight companions on domestic American flights, priority boarding and check-in, and a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit. That’s $705 less than buying the lounge alone, and you keep everything else.
If you would never buy lounge access at any price, the answer flips. Then $695 is just $695, and the new credits are the kind you have to work to collect: up to $500 a year on American Airlines Vacations packages, split into two $250 halves that expire mid-year and year-end; up to $100 a year on inflight and Admirals Club purchases; up to $180 a year in Lyft credits, doled out $15 at a time and only after three eligible rides in the same month. Citi and American say the package is worth up to $2,300 a year. That number assumes you buy vacation packages from American.
Now the date that matters, because it isn’t August 23. New perks land for everyone that day, including the bump to 12 AAdvantage miles per dollar on AAdvantage Hotels and Cars bookings and up to 40,000 Loyalty Points in annual bonuses, double the old cap. The higher fee doesn’t. If you’ve had the card more than 12 months, you get a notice in August or September and pay $695 at your next anniversary. Under 12 months and you won’t be notified until August 2027.
So you have time, and a free window where the benefits improve before your price does.
Do this before your anniversary date, not after the fee posts. Open last year’s statements and count your actual Admirals Club visits. Six or more a year and you’re already ahead of the $750 single membership, let alone the $1,400 one. Fewer than that, and you don’t book American Airlines Vacations, and you’re paying $695 for a bag and a boarding group. Call Citi and ask about a product change to a cheaper AAdvantage card rather than closing the account, which protects your credit history.
