Vanguard found that about a third of workers who took a 401(k) hardship withdrawal in 2025 had a plan loan available and nothing borrowed. With prime at 7%, a typical 401(k) loan runs about 8%, and the interest goes back into your own account. Here is the math, and the one way the loan can blow up.
