If you’re building credit from zero or rebuilding after a rough stretch, one of the better starter cards is taking applications again. Capital One reopened the Discover it Secured card this week.
The ad says “deposit as low as $49.” Read that as a test result, not a price tag.
What came back, and what changed hands
Applications for the card stopped on June 2 while Discover’s cards moved over to Capital One, according to Doctor of Credit. The card relaunched October 5. The product page still lives at discover.com, but the footer now tells you that “you are now on a Capital One webpage.”
The rewards survived the move. It’s still 5% back on quarterly rotating categories, up to a quarterly maximum when you activate them, 1% on everything else, and a dollar-for-dollar match of every bit of cash back you earn in year one. No annual fee. “No credit score required to apply.” It reports to all three credit bureaus.
What’s new is footnote 3: “Deposit amount will be $49, $99, or $200 based on creditworthiness.”
That’s Capital One’s own playbook. Its Platinum Secured card uses the exact same three tiers.
Translation
You don’t pick $49. Capital One looks at your file and assigns one of three numbers. Every tier gets you the same starting line of at least $200.
So a $49 deposit means Capital One is fronting $151 of its own money. A $200 deposit means it’s fronting nothing. The number on your approval is the cheapest honest read you’ll get on how a big issuer sees you right now.
Not your call. Still useful.
Why this one beats Capital One’s other secured card
Same deposit math either way. Platinum Secured lists a 28.99% variable APR, tops out at a $1,000 line, pays no rewards, and graduates to a plain unsecured Platinum. The Discover version pays cash back, doubles it in year one, and can go up to a $1,000 to $3,000 maximum.
If you qualify for both, this is the one to get. Smart.
Do this
Use the “See if You’re Pre-Approved” button on the card’s page before you apply. When you’re approved, decide on your line right away: extra deposit only counts “within 35 days of being approved and before you activate your card.”
Then put one small bill on it, like a phone or streaming charge, and pay the full statement balance every month. A $200 line fills fast. Interest on a secured card is the one cost here that’s fully optional, so don’t pay it.
Activate the 5% categories each quarter. It’s free money you have to click for.
When the card graduates, keep it. Capital One says your deposit comes back and “all other card terms and features will remain the same,” so it’s the same account, and that’s the history you just spent a year building.

The detail
Capital One doesn’t publish a graduation timeline. It only says you’ll “earn your deposit back” once you “establish a positive track record.” The card page didn’t list a purchase APR when we checked. Look at the rates and fees disclosure before you apply. If you close the account, Capital One refunds the deposit once the balance is paid in full.
