If you have a hotel trip on Expedia or Hotels.com you were planning to book this month, get it in before Monday night. Tuesday, most travelers take a 50% cut in what the site pays back.
Expedia is overhauling One Key on July 28. If you donβt have status, the whole point of the program shrinks.
What actually changes
Base Blue members currently earn 2% back in OneKeyCash on Expedia hotel and vacation rental bookings. Starting Tuesday, that drops to 1%. Silver and Gold stay flat at 2%. Platinum, the top tier, gets a small bump to 3%.
On flights, the 0.2% that every tier used to earn goes to zero. Nobody earns OneKeyCash on Expedia flight bookings starting Tuesday.
Both Expedia and Hotels.com are also killing the Hotel Price Guarantee, which used to refund the difference if you found the same room cheaper somewhere else within a day of booking. There is no replacement.
Trips booked before July 28 earn at the rate in effect when you booked. Any OneKeyCash already sitting in your account keeps its value and its expiration date. Grandfathering only applies to the earnings, not to the Price Guarantee.
What that costs you
On a $1,200 hotel stay booked as a Blue member, the old rules paid you $24 in OneKeyCash. The new rules pay $12. Same room. Same night. Twelve fewer dollars back.
The flight change stings less on any single ticket, because 0.2% on a $400 flight was 80 cents. But if you were stacking Expedia flights and hotels into one trip to hit a Silver status tier ($5,000 in eligible spend), the flight leg no longer counts toward earnings and you may need to spend more on hotels to make it.
The Price Guarantee was quiet insurance. Nobody was booking with it in mind. Everyone who invoked it after the fact came out ahead. That safety net is gone.
Do this today or Monday
If you have a trip you were going to book on Expedia or Hotels.com anyway, book it this weekend. Same hotel, same dates, better earn rate. Bankβs bet is that youβll forget the deadline and buy on Tuesday.
If you are status shopping, Silver and Gold are the tiers that hold their earnings. Platinum earns more, but the annual qualifying spend is high enough that most travelers should not chase it.
If you were counting on the Price Guarantee to protect a booking you already made, price the same room on two other sites now. Direct hotel sites still run best-rate guarantees, and Booking.comβs Genius rates often undercut both Expedia and Hotels.com on the same property. If you find a lower price before Tuesday, either submit a Price Guarantee claim now or rebook.
Verdict
Middling for most travelers. Not a program-killer, but a real cut on the base tier where most Expedia customers actually live. The site is quietly rewarding its biggest spenders and quietly charging everyone else more for the same product.
Move by Monday if you were going anyway. Sign in, book, move on.
