The Education Department Says Some Student Loan Payments Came Out Wrong. Silence Does Not Mean Pending.

Borrowers are getting an email saying their income-driven repayment application produced an incorrect payment and they have to reapply. The line that will catch people: if your servicer never confirmed it, the application was canceled, not queued. Here is the two-minute check.

If you applied for an income-driven repayment plan this summer and the monthly number that came back looked strangely round, don’t build a budget on it. It may be wrong, and unwinding it is your job, not theirs.

Borrowers have been getting an email from the Education Department saying their recent IDR application produced an incorrect monthly payment “due to an error,” and that they need to submit an entirely new application to enroll in the plan they wanted. That’s annoying but survivable.

The third line in that email is the one that will hurt people. If you never received notification from your servicer that your application was processed, it wasn’t processed. It was canceled.

Read that again. A canceled application doesn’t send a letter. It doesn’t ping your phone. Plenty of borrowers filed paperwork in the spring, heard nothing, and reasonably assumed no news meant they were in the queue. Some of them are in no queue at all, with no forbearance holding the line while they wait.

This is not one bad week at one servicer. CNBC reported in June that the online application was failing to show every plan a borrower qualified for, particularly PAYE, and was quoting $50 a month regardless of income. Roughly 530,000 IDR applications were sitting unprocessed as of the last court-ordered status report. The GAO warned in March that the Department had cut its workforce roughly in half and stopped assessing servicer accuracy and call quality on a portfolio north of $1.6 trillion. And the monthly status reports that let anyone track this from the outside have stopped, because the settlement that required them only required six.

The timing is what makes this expensive. More than 7 million borrowers are being pushed out of SAVE on individual 90-day clocks, and the earliest of those deadlines is September 29. Miss your window and your servicer parks you on a Standard plan, which for most people is the highest monthly bill on the menu. If your application quietly evaporated, you are not enrolled, not protected, and not counting anything toward forgiveness.

Do this now, and it takes two minutes. Log in at StudentAid.gov, open “My Activity,” and confirm an IDR application is actually sitting there. No record and no servicer confirmation means treat it as canceled and file a new one. Screenshot the confirmation page and note the date, because you may need to prove when you filed.

Then check the payment figure yourself before you accept it. Run your income, family size and balance through the loan simulator at StudentAid.gov rather than trusting whatever the application spits out. If the two numbers disagree, the application is the one that’s been wrong lately.

One more thing. Deadline pressure is the oldest setup in the student loan scam playbook. Nobody legitimate charges a fee to fix a canceled application. The fix is free and you can do it yourself.

Some good news, honestly: new online applications have been clearing in roughly three to seven days. The half-million backlog is mostly old filings. Refiling today is usually faster than waiting on a ghost. Frequently asked questions

How do I tell whether my IDR application is actually pending?

Log in at StudentAid.gov and open 'My Activity.' That is the record the Department points borrowers to. If there is no application listed and your servicer never sent you a processing confirmation, treat it as canceled and submit a new one. Screenshot the submission confirmation and the date.

How long does a new income-driven repayment application take?

New applications submitted online have generally been clearing in about three to seven days. The half-million-application backlog is mostly older filings that need manual review or servicer coordination. That is why a fresh online application usually beats waiting on an old one that may not exist anymore.
